September 28 Sooke Fishing Report

Sooke's fishing has definitely turned the corner into Fall. The big springs have passed through, but the good news is that the winter fishing seems to have come on early, and there's some pretty decent coho passing through. It's a nice time of year to fish in Sooke, weather is nice, still quite warm, days are long, less wind and fog.

Best action sounds like it between the Sooke Bluffs and Otter Point, in front of the trailer park, just off the bottom. Neil from Salty Towers had a good day on Saturday, catching a couple 0f 8-10 winter springs and a 15 pound coho.

For the winter springs, glow hootchies and purple haze or jellyfish are good ones to try. It's a good idea to keep a line shallower too, with anchovy in a teaser head....'tis the season to get as many lines in the water as you can, chasing that bite.

Have fun out there!

September 15 Sooke Fishing Report

Some mixed reports out of Sooke this week. It seems the big Spring salmon have now passed us by, migrating upriver for their spawning....we have our fingers crossed for a healthy return, with many little babies growing up to be big healthy Chinook returning 3-5 years from now.

It appears the local feeder spring salmon may arrived early. These fish are usually plentiful come November, but anglers are reporting catching them now. This can be some of Sooke's most fun and productive fishing action, with smaller fish but many of them.

Here's a photo from Blue Wolf Charters from last week, showing a couple nice salmon caught at Muir Creek.

There are also reports of coho out in the deep water tidelines. Tons of bait out there too, so hopefully some salmon will be behind chasing it.

We are having some beautiful weather, sunny, no wind, no fog....better enjoy it while it lasts, the monsoon season is coming soon!

Good luck out there.

Big Sooke Halibut!

Randy Ruttan and Kirk Dodsan caught a 323 pound halibut on Sept.8th...here they are with their fish of a lifetime....caught near Sooke!

Certainly the biggest halibut of the year caught near Sooke, and possibly one of the largest ever caught by a recreational fisherman in the area.

Now that's a LOT of fish and chips!

September 6 Sooke Fishing Report

Neil from Salty Towers Oceanfront Cottages reports that plenty of big Chinook Salmon have come onto the dock in the last week. Greg brought a hockey bag full back to North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He says that Coho are showing up in larger numbers each day and a few big Chum have been caught lately.

Roy from Blue Wolf Charters posted a pic of this beauty caught this week at Sheringham. That's Karen with her first ever Chinook, an 18 pounder. The day before Mazel from Victoria caught this 44 pounder at Otter Point.

Other reports this weekend describe Sooke fishing as spotty, some anglers returning with limits and lots of others coming back empty handed. Otter Point and spots west in the afternoon seem to be the best call.

Good luck out there!
