July 30 Sooke Fishing Report

Here's a picture of Sooke's first 50 pounder of the year, (photo submitted to the Sooke News-Mirror). "Patrick from Washington State had 50.4 reasons to smile after hauling in this huge salmon on Sunday morning. "

Only days after opening, sockeye fishing in Sooke waters will close once again, as of July 30 9 pm. Apparently this opening was to coincide with a short commercial opening. We heard of only report of sockeye caught on Tuesday, hopefully more lucky anglers will find their way into some today before it closes.

A few reports of springs caught this week on SportfishingBC. Tuesday was a rainy day in Sooke, and about the first time in what seems like weeks that it was calm midday.

This morning, a few reports of fishermen chasing sockeye with no success, but heard of a few medium size springs caught along the way, off Secretary Island.

A look at the hook book

Eldon Smith reminds anglers that Sockeye, since Saturday, are fair game, up to four a day. You’re invited to check the posting at the Crab Shack or the fisheries website at www.dfo.mpo.gc.ca for details.

The big news is the 50-pounder pulled in off Otter Point on Sunday morning.

Other successful landings include a 25.5 pounder for Colin Corby at Otter Point; Lorna Carswell - 17 pounds at Possession Point.

Eldon said fishing picked up as the week progressed but came to a stop Saturday as the killer whales had a good feed.

Other catches with 2-Reel included fish of 15x2, 16, 17, 19, 21 and 23 pounds.

Crab Shack Charters – E. Smith - 11.5 and Riley S. - 32 pounds.

Jimmy Chow - 27.5 and 25.5, Rodney Sullivan - 24, Dave Carswell - 27, Lewis Schille - 25.5, Rob Robinson caught a 31-pound halibut while trolling for salmon.

Harvey Wood - 36.5 and 27, Troy Smith - 14.5, Jazz and Nona - 25 and 21.

July 29 Sooke Fishing Report

A fisherman from Washington caught a 50 pound salmon in Sooke today. WOW!

In general, fishing around Sooke continues to be spotty. There's a good day here and there, and the fish are around, but you have to work for them. It has been very WINDY, keeping many anglers off the water.

Mark and Sharon Price report a good haul last week, 3 chinooks up to 28 lbs, and a halibut caught off Otter Point area. Monday, Mark and Neil (from Salty Towers) caught this 32 lb spring and his little brother.

Sockeye fishing is open in Sooke waters, max 4 per license per day.

Below is last week's report from the July 15 Sooke News Mirror:

Local sport– fishing update update

No records are being set but a handful of anglers have been finding success in local waters of late.

Eldon Smith at the Crab Shack keeps records of this kind of thing and he made notes of the following catches over the past week. The fish are salmon unless otherwise noted.

Dave Thistledew and Don Thompson hooked fish in the 31-pound range, near Possession Point, and Otter Point, respectively.

Aaron Cameron reeled in an 18 pounder off Possession Point. Brian LaCroix hauled in a 65 and-a-half pound halibut at Race Rocks. Vince Granon was rewarded with 16 and 19 pounders.

On the weekend Bev Dabbyn netted a 15 pounder while Brian LaCroix and Kari Lindroos got a trio of halibut – 98, 42 and 32 pounds.

Checking in at Sunny Shores – Jesse Tremblay weighed a 26-pound fish while Justin Florel caught a 42-pound halibut right in the Sooke area.

Ben Heuber presented a 35-pounder, and Ed Hood managed to bring in fish of 30, 25 and 15 pounds.

July 12 Sooke Fishing Report

Fishing around Sooke continues to be a bit spotty. There's some big Vancouver Island beauties being weighed in, but also quite a few reports of slow days. The bad weather in the past week has not helped, with a few windy days cutting short the fishing efforts.

Otter Point is reported as a best bet for catching a spring, although there are also a fair number of reports of salmon caught at Secretary Island. This 16 lb chinook caught off Otter Point by Hazen Price last Monday -- way to go!

Mark from Footloose Charters caught two halibut while fishing for salmon between Muir Creek and Third rock with some guests from New Hampshire staying at Salty Towers. They also caught a 22 pound chinook off Secretary Island.

Ryan from Fresh Fishin' Charters sent in the photo below of a nice spring salmon caught recently.

July 1 Sooke Fishing Report

Happy Canada Day!

Sooke fishing remains a bit spotty, although salmon are still coming in regularly. The usual combination of persistence and hard work are paying off...and a bit of luck thrown in doesn't hurt. There are reports of lots of needlefish, so you might want to experiment with one line targetting those, such as small squirts or spoons.

The whalewatching boats are happy, as there are lots of whales around these days, with reports of both humpbacks and orcas. The "J Pod" of orcas have been passing through and putting on an impressive show, sometimes close to shore and other times out in the Strait.

Roy at Blue Wolf caught an 18 lb spring today, reporting that his impressed female Australian guests wanted to take photos of "his gear" :-)

A fishing tall tale received this week: a fisherman reported catching a 15lb spring off possession point a few days ago and then crossed over Sooke Harbour towards Muir Point. Along the way, he ran one line deep, right off the bottom at 120 feet -- and hooked into a halibut on his salmon gear. He played it for about 45 minutes, chasing it with his kicker on maximum. He got it close to the boat at one point, and reports that is was bigger than average, maybe 60-80 pounds. Near the end of this epic battle, the halibut dove under the boat and broke the line on the prop. Another "one that got away" story, and I'm sure that halibut will get bigger after every telling...a year from now it could be as big as 200 pounds.

On another note, the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society (SSES) is having a fundraising raffle, to replace its cancelled fishing derby. The Society is selling 800 tickets at $20 each, and is giving out 44 prizes with a minimum value of $100 each. Early bird draws are on July 18th and 25th at Sooke Home Hardware, and the big draw is on August 34d at the "Salmon Day at the Flats". Tickets can be purchased at Crab Shack and Eagle Eye Wilderness, or July 2-4 and 9-10 at Village Foods and Sooke Home Hardware. Support Sooke's fish hatchery and do your part to keep Sooke salmon stocks healthy!
