June 28 Sooke Fishing Report

The fishing in Sooke has been somewhat hit and miss in the last few days. There are fish coming through Sooke's waters, but you have to work a bit for them...some days there is plenty of bait in the water, and others not so much.

Roy at Blue Wolf Charters caught several nice Spring salmon earlier this week, topping out with a 38 pounds, plus several others 19-26 pounds. That's not such a bad day of Vancouver Island fishing!

As well, it feels a bit more like summer out there, finally, with some sun and warm weather in Sooke and Victoria. Remember your sunscreen! (and around here, that's a good problem to have).

Good luck out there!

June 24 Sooke Fishing Report

The fishing action continues to heat up in and around Sooke. Calm seas on Saturday morning saw dozens of boats off Possession Point trying their luck, and a few beauties were brought in.

Keith Martin caught a 39.8 pound Spring salmon off the Sooke Bluffs (from fishtactics.com).

The Annual Glen Lake Inn - Eagle Eye Outfitters Fishing Derby was held on Sunday, and some decent fish were weighed in despite high winds and big seas. Ryan Chamberland caught the winner at 27.5 pounds.

Secretary Island and the Trap Shack are reported as good bets right now.

Good luck out there!

June 18, 2008 Sooke Fishing Report

Sooke's fishing season has begun to take off -- even if the weather doesn't yet seem much like summer, the fishing has started to feel a bit more like it.

Mark at Footloose Fishing Charters reports catching several salmon in the 20s last week, right out front of Sooke Harbour, after just a few hours out on a flat calm morning. Nice! Earlier in the week, he also caught a nice halibut on salmon gear, off the Sooke Bluffs.

The Juan de Fuca derby was held last weekend. 82 salmon were weighed in, with the winning fish a 36.8 lb spring caught by Joe Kadar. 7 more were weighed in above 30 lbs. As usual, Sooke’s waters delivered, with many of the fish caught at Sooke fishing hotspots, in particular Secretary Island.

Time to hit the water and start chasing some Sooke salmon!
