July 30 Sooke Fishing Report

Here's a picture of Sooke's first 50 pounder of the year, (photo submitted to the Sooke News-Mirror). "Patrick from Washington State had 50.4 reasons to smile after hauling in this huge salmon on Sunday morning. "

Only days after opening, sockeye fishing in Sooke waters will close once again, as of July 30 9 pm. Apparently this opening was to coincide with a short commercial opening. We heard of only report of sockeye caught on Tuesday, hopefully more lucky anglers will find their way into some today before it closes.

A few reports of springs caught this week on SportfishingBC. Tuesday was a rainy day in Sooke, and about the first time in what seems like weeks that it was calm midday.

This morning, a few reports of fishermen chasing sockeye with no success, but heard of a few medium size springs caught along the way, off Secretary Island.

A look at the hook book

Eldon Smith reminds anglers that Sockeye, since Saturday, are fair game, up to four a day. You’re invited to check the posting at the Crab Shack or the fisheries website at www.dfo.mpo.gc.ca for details.

The big news is the 50-pounder pulled in off Otter Point on Sunday morning.

Other successful landings include a 25.5 pounder for Colin Corby at Otter Point; Lorna Carswell - 17 pounds at Possession Point.

Eldon said fishing picked up as the week progressed but came to a stop Saturday as the killer whales had a good feed.

Other catches with 2-Reel included fish of 15x2, 16, 17, 19, 21 and 23 pounds.

Crab Shack Charters – E. Smith - 11.5 and Riley S. - 32 pounds.

Jimmy Chow - 27.5 and 25.5, Rodney Sullivan - 24, Dave Carswell - 27, Lewis Schille - 25.5, Rob Robinson caught a 31-pound halibut while trolling for salmon.

Harvey Wood - 36.5 and 27, Troy Smith - 14.5, Jazz and Nona - 25 and 21.

Iwl Charter - 29 and 15x2, Teague Griffin - 23, J. Planes - 20 and Norm Helgesen - 22.5.
