July 1 Sooke Fishing Report
Happy Canada Day!
Sooke fishing remains a bit spotty, although salmon are still coming in regularly. The usual combination of persistence and hard work are paying off...and a bit of luck thrown in doesn't hurt. There are reports of lots of needlefish, so you might want to experiment with one line targetting those, such as small squirts or spoons.
The whalewatching boats are happy, as there are lots of whales around these days, with reports of both humpbacks and orcas. The "J Pod" of orcas have been passing through and putting on an impressive show, sometimes close to shore and other times out in the Strait.
On another note, the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society (SSES) is having a fundraising raffle, to replace its cancelled fishing derby. The Society is selling 800 tickets at $20 each, and is giving out 44 prizes with a minimum value of $100 each. Early bird draws are on July 18th and 25th at Sooke Home Hardware, and the big draw is on August 34d at the "Salmon Day at the Flats". Tickets can be purchased at Crab Shack and Eagle Eye Wilderness, or July 2-4 and 9-10 at Village Foods and Sooke Home Hardware. Support Sooke's fish hatchery and do your part to keep Sooke salmon stocks healthy!

Roy at Blue Wolf caught an 18 lb spring today, reporting that his impressed female Australian guests wanted to take photos of "his gear" :-)
A fishing tall tale received this week: a fisherman reported catching a 15lb spring off possession point a few days ago and then crossed over Sooke Harbour towards Muir Point. Along the way, he ran one line deep, right off the bottom at 120 feet -- and hooked into a halibut on his salmon gear. He played it for about 45 minutes, chasing it with his kicker on maximum. He got it close to the boat at one point, and reports that is was bigger than average, maybe 60-80 pounds. Near the end of this epic battle, the halibut dove under the boat and broke the line on the prop. Another "one that got away" story, and I'm sure that halibut will get bigger after every telling...a year from now it could be as big as 200 pounds.
